XM Trading: From MT5 Account Opening to Running Your First EA [2026 Guide]

XM Trading is one of the most popular offshore FX brokers among retail traders, with full MT5 support. You can run EAs on a wide range of instruments including Gold (XAUUSD) and USD/JPY.

This article walks you through every step — from opening an MT5 account with XM Trading to configuring and activating your EA.

XM Trading MT5 Account Overview

ItemDetails
Minimum deposit$5 (Standard account)
LeverageUp to 1,000x (excluding corporate accounts)
XAUUSD (Gold) spreadApprox. 2–4 pips
SwapYes (Gold sell-side swap can be favorable in some conditions)
BonusesWelcome bonus and deposit bonus available
MT5 supportExcellent (desktop and mobile app)

XM Trading offers several account types. For EA trading, we recommend the following.

Standard Account (for beginners)

  • Minimum lot: 0.01
  • Spread type: Variable
  • Commission: None (built into the spread)
  • Key features: Eligible for bonuses, minimum deposit just $5

If you're new to EAs, we recommend starting with the Standard account. The low minimum deposit lets you verify EA behavior without taking on significant risk.

XM Zero Account (for advanced traders)

  • Spread: RAW (from 0 pips)
  • Commission: $3.50 per lot
  • Key features: Advantageous for scalping EAs

The tighter spreads benefit high-frequency and short-duration EAs. However, because commissions apply, low-frequency EAs may actually fare worse here than on Standard.

Step 1: Open an Account with XM Trading

  1. Visit the XM Trading official site
  2. Click "Open a Real Account"
  3. Fill in the required fields:
    • Email address
    • Country of residence
    • Full name and address (in Roman letters)
    • Date of birth
  4. Select your account type (Standard MT5 recommended)
  5. Trading currency: USD (or your preferred currency)
  6. Leverage: 200x (beginner) up to 1,000x
  7. Upload your ID document (driver's license or passport)

Identity verification typically completes within 1–3 business days.

XM-Specific Points to Watch

Gold symbol is "GOLD", not "XAUUSD"

On MT5 at XM Trading, the Gold instrument is listed as "GOLD" — not "XAUUSD". When attaching a Gold EA, make sure to apply it to the GOLD chart.

Using the welcome bonus

XM's welcome (account-opening) bonus can be used with automated trading. However, withdrawal conditions apply, so avoid taking on excessive risk purely to chase bonus payouts.

Using a VPS

XM Trading recommends running EAs on a VPS (Virtual Private Server) for uninterrupted operation. XM itself offers a free VPS, but it requires meeting certain trading volume and account balance thresholds. If you don't qualify, use a third-party VPS. Compare recommended VPS options

Checking swap points

If your EA holds positions overnight, swap charges (or credits) will apply. You can check XM's swap rates directly in MT5 by right-clicking any symbol and selecting Specification.
