We Backtested 43 Popular Gold EAs on 11.5 Years of Real Data

The #1-priced gold EA on our list — $1,999, 109 reviews — lost 99% of the account over 11.5 years of real data. Meanwhile, a $99 EA survived with a 0.9% max drawdown.

We downloaded the free demos of 43 popular paid gold (XAUUSD) EAs from the MQL5 Market and backtested them all under identical conditions, every one on factory-default settings, across 11.5 years of real price data. As far as we know, a named, like-for-like test at this scale has rarely been published. Here is everything — results and methodology.

11.5 years spans the 2015–18 range market, the 2020 COVID shock, the 2022 rate-hike regime, and the 2024–26 gold bull run. A backtest that only shows the recent hot streak cannot hide here.

The 5 unmeasurable EAs log every order to file on default settings, so their tests did not finish within our 40-minute cap (we make no quality judgment about them). The no-trade EA does not open positions on defaults.

Finding 1: Price Has Nothing to Do With Quality

  • Median price of the 17 🟢 Excellent EAs: $299
  • Median price of the 7 🔴 blown-up EAs: $499

The blow-ups cost more. The most expensive product in the study, XG Gold Robot ($1,999, 109 reviews), finished at PF 0.23 with a 99% drawdown — a total loss. Aurum AI ($499, 47 reviews) and ArtQuant Gold ($700) also blew up. "Expensive, popular, well-reviewed" proves nothing.

Meanwhile the top of the Excellent group is full of cheap EAs: Vex Gold EA ($199), Xauusd Aether ($189), One Gold ($195, 43 reviews), Smart Gold Impulse ($99, 0.9% DD).

Finding 2: Some Famous EAs Genuinely Deliver

To be fair — this is not a "they're all scams" story.

  • The Gold Reaper ($849, 101 reviews): PF 2.24, DD 17.8%, 8,745 trades — exactly as advertised
  • Goldwave EA ($999, 69 reviews): PF 5.73, DD 4.1%
  • Gold House ($749, 56 reviews): PF 2.93, DD 1.1%, 9,531 trades

The market is a mix of gems and landmines. What matters is whether you have a way to tell them apart.

Finding 3: Results Were Consistent Across Brokers

We separately re-tested a subset on HFM real-tick data. Adaptive Gold Scalper and SomaGold were excellent in both environments; ArtQuant Gold blew up in both. Real edges travel; fake ones don't.

Limitations (Honestly)

  1. OHLC model limits: a 1-minute OHLC model can flatter thin-take-profit scalpers. We recommend real-tick re-tests for the PF>10 group. (Conversely, a blow-up verdict under an optimistic model is even more damning.)
  2. Defaults only: no vendor set files. This reproduces "buy and run".
  3. Single feed: MetaQuotes data. Numbers shift across brokers (though per Finding 3, verdicts largely travel).

5 Ways to Protect Yourself Before Buying

  1. Demand a 10+ year real-data backtest (a report covering only the recent hot streak is worthless)
  2. Check the DD is equity-based (balance DD can understate reality 4x)
  3. Reproduce it on defaults — demos are free
  4. Look at year-by-year P/L (one huge year plus red years = regime luck)
  5. Require a live forward track record

We build and sell EAs ourselves, and our policy is simple: nothing ships unless it survives these five checks. That is why every product's real-data backtests and live forward results are public.

Bottom Line

  • 43 popular paid gold EAs, 11.5 years of real data, factory defaults
  • 19% blew up the account; price and review counts predicted nothing
  • 40% are genuinely excellent — if you can tell which
  • Everything here is reproducible: download the demos and run the same test yourself
