Do Expensive EAs Perform Better? Price, Reviews and Backtests of 441 Gold EAs

When choosing an EA, most people look at the price and the stars first. "An expensive EA must be well built." "An EA with many good reviews must be safe." How well do those instincts match actual results?

We took the 441 EAs from 441 MQL5 Gold EAs Backtested Under Identical Conditions and matched each backtest against the product page's price, review count and rating. We do not name individual products; only the overall patterns are published.

Results by price band

$300–600661.1919.1%64%21%24%
$600 and up452.018.1%76%13%13%

At first glance this looks like "the more expensive, the better", but the table is not that simple.

  • Free EAs did clearly worse. Their median profit factor was 0.80, and almost half (46%) lost more than 90% of the deposit.
  • The $300–600 band did worse than the $100–300 band. Median profit factor fell from 1.37 to 1.19, and median maximum drawdown deepened from 11.5% to 19.1%.
  • Even in the $600+ band, 13% lost more than 90% of the deposit. Blow-ups are not rare among expensive EAs.

Correlation between price and results

For the 404 paid EAs, we computed rank correlations between price and results (Spearman's rank correlation; closer to 1 means "more expensive is better").

PairRank correlation
Price vs profit factor0.16
Price vs net profit0.20
Price vs maximum drawdown−0.03

Price has a weak positive relationship with profit factor and net profit. But price and maximum drawdown are essentially unrelated (−0.03). A higher price does not mean a shallower drawdown. Whether an EA protects the account cannot be read from its price.

"Too good" results are more common in the expensive bands

In the previous article we flagged "too good" results: maximum drawdown under 2% with net profit above $100,000 (10× the deposit). Every binary we tested was built in 2026, so the whole test period is "the past with the answers known" for every EA. Extreme results like these are likely to be strongly affected by fitting to the past.

PriceEAs"Too good" resultsShare

Under $10011922%
$100–30017474%
$300–60066711%
$600 and up45511%

From $300 up, about 1 in 9 EAs shows this "too good" pattern, and it lifts part of the $600+ band's strong numbers. Even after removing those 5, however, the $600+ band still has a median profit factor of 1.83 and a median maximum drawdown of 10.8%, so it remains a top band.

Do review counts and ratings help?

ReviewsEAsMedian PFMedian max DDProfitableLost 90%+ of deposit

10–49691.519.9%70%16%
50+191.198.1%68%16%

EAs with 10 or more reviews blow up somewhat less often, yet about 1 in 6 still lost more than 90% of the deposit. Across all 441 EAs, the rank correlation between review count and profit factor was 0.03, which means almost no relationship.

Star ratings were even less useful. Among the 88 EAs with 10+ reviews, the rank correlation between rating and profit factor was −0.10, and the 43 EAs rated below 4.5 did better than the 45 rated 4.5 or higher.

88 EAs with 10+ reviewsEAsMedian PFMedian max DDProfitable
Rated 4.5+451.2215.8%64%
Rated below 4.5431.597.7%74%

Stars reflect buyers' satisfaction over the period they actually used the EA, which is a different thing from long-term backtest performance.

Limitations

  • These are 1-minute OHLC backtests with default inputs. Results can differ from the author's recommended settings, account conditions, or real-tick testing.
  • Prices and reviews are as of October 5, 2026. Later price changes are not reflected.
  • This is a historical test. Every EA was measured on a period before its build date, and the results do not predict future performance.
  • Small bands ($600+, 50+ reviews, etc.) can shift their medians with just a few EAs.

How to use this when choosing an EA

Three takeaways from these 441 EAs:

  1. Do not plan to run a free EA on a live account as is. At the median it lost money, and almost half lost more than 90% of the deposit.
  2. Price is not a guide to drawdown. Even for an expensive EA, always check the maximum drawdown yourself.
  3. Look at the testing, not the stars. In this data, high ratings and good results were almost unrelated.

Always read performance figures together with maximum drawdown. Our testing approach is published in our real-tick verification report.
